L’Appellation des Coteaux du Giennois

Domaine Poupat & Fils

Vineyards of Center-Loire, the Coteaux du Giennois border the royal river, in the departments of Loiret and Nièvre. If Coteaux alludes to the hilly landscape of the appellation, Giennois recalls the name of the main town of the appellation, which grows its vines up the Loire river for nearly 50 km.

Coming from a long history, the Coteaux du Giennois appellation was created in 1954 in VDQS thanks to our ancestor René POUPAT.

Later, in May 1998, the Coteaux du Giennois received the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée.

The arrival of new generations and investments in the vineyard and in the cellar increasingly focused on quality have boosted the vineyard which has today taken its place in the Center-Loire.

We are constantly working on our knowledge of the vine in order to best express what makes up the essence of our wines.

Perfect knowledge of the plant, the constant search for improvement and technical progress will make it possible to best express the potential and the particularity of grape varieties and soils.

SOILS AND A SPECIAL CLIMATE…

Planted at a geological crossroads in Center-Loire and benefiting from an attenuated oceanic climate, the vines generally grow on a wide variety of soils.

There are ancient terraces of the Loire to the north of the appellation, in Gien, and extensions of the geological formations of Sancerrois and Pouilly, mainly limestone to the east of the Cosne fault and siliceous to the west with deposits of tertiary flint.

… FOR SINGULAR WINES!

The white wines give beautiful expressions of Sauvignon. They share common qualities such as freshness and finesse with aromas of exotic fruits which only belong to the appellation.

The reds, a blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, are fine and fruity, with aromas of red and black fruits developing peppery notes. The sweet and fragrant side of Pinot Noir and the liveliness of Gamay balance out in a very harmonious blend.

The rosés, fine and delicate, with slightly peppery notes, very often express aromas of vine peaches.

The story of the estate

Before obtaining the AOC, the rules for blending red wines were not yet set for Gamays and Pinots Noirs. The Le Trocadéro and Rivotte cuvées, predominantly one or the other of the two grape varieties, had already found their place in the story of the Domaine.

The Estate

The POUPAT family is one of the oldest vinegrower families in the Giennois.

Around 1650, Nicolas POUPAT cultivated the vine in our beautiful region. 360 years later, the POUPAT family is still rooted in the Giennois area.
